Williams information

The Bill Williams Mountain Men in a Williams  parade.

Williams was named after mountain man, William Sherley Williams, a scout and trapper, and was founded by a local rancher, Charles T. Rogers in 1881.  In 1901 a fire destroyed many of the wooden buildings, and were rebuilt as brick and stucco buildings and still stand today in the area of our current Railroad Ave, and Grand Canyon Blvd in down town Williams. As late as 1901, Williams had the reputation of riotous and rough living, with gambling halls, opium dens, and brothels making Williams a true Wild West Town.

The Bill Williams Mountain Men have continued with  western tradition as they still wear traditional garb, and once a year gather in Williams to begin the journey to Phoenix, through the rough Mogollon Rim.

Check out the Williams Grand Canyon tourist guide for information to our area.

In Williams there is an extreme sense of community when you get to know everybody who you see in the town, similar to Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon.

Williams is a Route 66 town. It was the last section of Route 66 to be bypassed by the highway system in 1984.

Williams is a four-season area. It is cold and snowy in the winter and moderate in the summer. Williams is almost surrounded by the Kaibab National Forest. This is great because it leaves the land open for recreation. There are good trails to hike, and dirt roads to bike. There is an 18-hole golf course open during the warm months. In the winter, there is skiing at the Williams Ski Area and the Arizona Snow Bowl. There is abundant game for hunting, and the lakes are stocked for fishing.

The Williams Ski Area is a small, fun ski area.

Jade after a face plant. She was fine.

The Grand Canyon is only 60 miles north of Williams on State Route 64. Arizona is known as the Grand Canyon state. The Canyon is awesome.

The Grand Canyon Railway is a major attraction for Williams. The train offers daily round trips to the Canyon. Every time I've ridden the train I've enjoyed the day.

Williams has a lot of lodging because it is  on I-40 and near the Canyon. There are a lot of motels. This is good for the consumer because you can almost always find a decent room for a modest price, if you shop around.

Williams population is around 3000 with the City Limits, however within a 20 mile radius, the population is growing and is estimated at around 7000, that shop, go to school and work in Williams.

Williams has an interesting and informative local paper that comes out every Wednesday.  For more information on a subscription or to view the latest news and information published see:  http://www.williamsnews.com/
