Flagstaff is growing. According to the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES), Flagstaff had a population of 60,708 in 2000. This population is expected to grow to 66,552  by 2005. By 2050, the population is expected to almost double to  113,684 people.
Currently, the state unemployment level is 3.9%. Flagstaff's unemployment average is 5.6% according to DES. For Coconino County, the service industry is the leading employer. This is followed by government-related jobs.
Flagstaff is a major shopping center for northern Arizona. It has several big box stores, i.e. Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Home Depot. It also has a large variety of grocery stores, hardware stores and specialty shops.
At least twice through the 90s, Outdoor Magazine has rated Flagstaff as one of the most livable cities in the USA. I'm not sure of the parameters for their rating, but I think it has to do with recreational opportunities, culture, and lifestyle.
In Flagstaff,  there is always something to do. The country lends itself to all kinds of outdoor recreation: skiing, golfing, hunting, hiking, biking, etc. There are many different churches, civic groups, and clubs. There are year-round indoor swimming pools, athletic clubs, and gyms. There is something for almost everyone.  Northern Arizona University also brings a lot of culture, intellectual influences and positive economic input.

The Arizona Snowbowl's Ridge Run goes from almost the top of Agassiz Peak. The views are awesome, and the skiing is good.
